Hockey Talk & Business Continues

Councillor’s Corner - Wednesday August 9, 2017
Last week’s meeting was long but good. A hefty chunk of items were worked on and we had two deputations.
The first deputation was a welcomed presentation presented by President Sherri McKinnon and Treasurer Laura Rose on behalf of the Hornepayne Minor Hockey Asssociation (HMHA) to discuss the upcoming hockey season. We, at Council, congratulated the volunteers that stepped up into the board positions and the current board serving HMHA is President Sherri McKinnon, Vice President Jennifer Felix, Treasurer Laura Rose, Directors Kayla Brown, Heather Dorion, Kyle Shea, and Donna Morgan. There are two vacant positions currently, the secretary and a director position. These positions are a great opportunity to volunteer and learn about running an organization. Thank-you HMHA for coming in and keeping us informed at the municipal level; it is appreciated as always. HMHA has been a very vocal and active voice in our community and our children have benefitted. Thank-you to our new volunteers but also to our past ones. My own children would not have had the chance to participate without you.
Our second deputation was a closed session to discuss a Contract Proposal from Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) and the presentation was done by Julie Culverhouse and Jeff St. Pierre from OCWA.
We had several requests for town events coming up and it is great to see so much happening. There is the Dog Social on Aug 11 at the ballpark, Community Spirit Day on Aug 12 on Front Street, Bike Park Fundraiser on Sept 9th, Terry Fox Run on Sept 17th, and the Annual Community Stork Walk on Sept 23rd. Keep an eye out for more information about these events in the upcoming days and weeks from the local organizers.
Some exciting policy was worked on! We worked through the Water/Sewer Line Repair policy with some enthusiastic discussion. Staff will be gathering more information from surrounding communities and we will be discussing this policy again at an upcoming meeting before we vote on it. We created a Boil Water Advisory Policy and that should be accepted at our next Council meeting. We worked through a Livestreaming/Recording of Meetings Policy and Student Councillor By-Law which will be voted on at the next meeting. There has been a lot of work being done at the Township during this summer and a big thank you for all this work.
The column will resume on September 13th. Enjoy the rest of your summer and be safe.
Sincerely,
Cheryl T Fort
