Running for an Election?

Councillor’s Corner - Wednesday, June 7, 2017
Last Thursday a group of women met at the Hornepayne Action Centre to listen to a panel of speakers from the Thunder Bay area on the mechanics of running for municipal office. Overall, the meeting went well after powering through some technical difficulties. The panel was composed of four different women and they each shared part of the difficulties and successes of running and being a part of an election process. The speakers were Wendy Landry the Mayor of Shuniah, Rebecca Johnson a City of Thunder Bay Councillor, Wendy Wright a Councillor for the Gilles Township and Ann Zuliani the Campaign Manager for Patty Hajdu. The women learned about when the election cycle. Officially you can not notify the public of your intention to run for office until May 1, 2018. The period from May 1 to July 27, 2018 is the timeframe which individuals can fill out the paperwork to run for council. I have a recorded copy of the panel and some material that was distributed for interested participants. If anyone would like that material please contact me and I can email you the information with the digital recording. Thank-you to Taylor Paul of the Hornepayne Action Centre for her technical support, guidance and overall professionalism. Thank-you to the women that participated and it my sincerest hope that you or someone you know is motivated to get involved at the municipal level.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Fort
