MPAC Presentation

Councillor’s Corner - Wednesday April, 26th, 2017
At the council meeting on April 19th Mr. Jeremy Cormier, Account Manager of the District of Algoma, from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) gave a PowerPoint presentation on the “General Assessment and MPAC” plus allowing for questions and answers. Mr. Cormier detailed the process that MPAC uses to valuate the properties in our community. For residential properties, MPAC uses five major factors that generally account for 85% of your property value. These factors are location, lot dimensions, living area, age of property (adjusted for any renovations or additions) and quality of construction. He also showcased the website www.aboutmyproperty.ca which property owners can use to access valuable information about their own property and comparable properties. Property owners are encouraged to learn about their MPAC Assessment Notice and what can be done if there is a disagreement with your property assessment. Each year property owners can submit a “Request for Reconsideration” and provide evidence if you disagree with your property assessment. The Request for Reconsideration process is free. Mr. Cormier encouraged property owners to contact MCAP if you have any questions, concerns or general inquires about your assessment. The toll-free number for MPAC is 1-866-296-MPAC (6722) and the office hours are Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm. It was good to see people out at the council meeting and asking hard questions plus voicing concerns. As always if you have questions please don’t hesitate to contact me through email at cheryltfort@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
